Bodega Volcanes de Chile Reserva Carmenere 2022 750ml
Bodega Volcanes de Chile Reserva Carmenere 2022 750ml
CHILE : RAPEL VALLEY : ALMAHUE
SUSTAINABLE : Carmenere
FULL-BODIED, BLACK CHERRY, DARK CHOCOLATE, BELL PEPPER, GREEN OLIVE, OAK
The Rapel Valley sits where Andean scree meets Pacific coast influence, and the Almahue sector within it has Andesite volcanic stones in the subsoil — measurable geology, not marketing language. Bodega Volcanes de Chile, the volcanic terroir project of Viña Undurraga, sources this Carmenere specifically from those parcels, where the volcanic matter improves drainage, helps vines manage summer drought stress, and is associated with aromatic precision that flat-land Rapel fruit rarely achieves.
Winemaker Pilar Díaz trained in Burgundy, Marlborough, and Napa before settling in Chile in 2009 — and her philosophy is restrained oak with varietal honesty. The 2022 vintage was a low-yield, drought-stressed year across Chile, but Rapel held up well: concentrated fruit, cooler spring temperatures, and warm February–March ripening produced a Carmenere with real structure. Tim Atkin MW rates Volcanes de Chile a Fifth Growth-level producer.
