The oldest distillery on Islay, founded in 1779 on the shore of Loch Indaal, Bowmore still malts a quarter of its barley on-site — spread on stone floors, peated over locally cut Islay peat, dried to 25–30 ppm. That number sits at the moderate end of the Islay spectrum: enough smoke to place you firmly on the island, balanced against 12 years in ex-Bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks that deliver the lemon, honey, and fruit the house is known for.

The 12-year is the benchmark expression — and earns the description. More restrained than Laphroaig or Ardbeg, it makes the argument for peat as flavor rather than feat. Gold at both the World Whisky Awards and the International Spirits Challenge in 2024; 93 points from Wine Enthusiast.
