Bowmore Darkest is what happens when the oldest distillery on Islay — 1779, with a vaulted warehouse built below sea level on the loch shore — runs the same whisky through two completely different casks. The first twelve years in ex-Bourbon American oak lay down the toffee, vanilla, and smoke integration. The final three years in Oloroso Sherry casks stack dark fruit, Christmas pudding, and dried raisin on top. At 43% ABV, it holds its shape neat or with a drop of water.

Whisky Advocate scored it 90 points: "lush fruit, raisin, pot-still rum, and Heath bars — citrus and wood spices emerge, along with burning peat embers that linger on the finish." Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2018. Gold from both the IWSC and International Spirits Challenge the same year. For anyone who wants to understand Islay without getting buried in smoke, Darkest is the answer: the peat is there, but the sherry owns the conversation.
