Espolón was founded in 1995 in the Los Altos highlands of Jalisco — higher elevation, red clay soil, cooler nights — which produces agave with more mineral definition and a leaner, brighter character than lowland bottles. The distillery is in Arandas, and Campari Group has owned the label since 2009, though production stayed put and the team remained intact through founder Cirilo Oropeza's tenure until his death in 2020.

The reposado rests 2–6 months in #2 char American oak, entering at 42% ABV, where the barrel adds vanilla and caramel without burying the highland agave underneath. Wine Enthusiast rated it 90 points — "light gold reposado balances vanilla sweetness with mild, zingy notes of mint, menthol and green pepper, finishing with a perky cayenne pepper tingle." TAG Global Spirits Awards named it Best in Show in 2024.
