In 2009, Munich wine merchant Guido Walter asked Rheinhessen winemaker Jürgen Hofmann a simple question: could Müller-Thurgau do La Dolce Vita? The grape had spent decades in the bulk wine wilderness — Black Tower, Blue Nun, Liebfraumilch — and had been largely written off. Hofmann's answer was Fritz Müller.

Grapes come from Hofmann's old-vine parcels around Appenheim, where his father had grown the vine on shell limestone soils for decades. Direct press, stainless steel fermentation, the CO2 from the ferment captured and held in the wine. The result is a Perlwein — lightly sparkling, 11.5%, screwcap — built for drinking cold. Wine Enthusiast called it "delightfully fun and refreshing" — 90 points.
