Blended from around 40 single malt and grain whiskies — every component aged a minimum of 12 years — Black Label is built around Cardhu's Speyside honey and fruit, layered with the maritime pepper of Talisker from the Isle of Skye and the deep coastal peat of Lagavulin from Islay. Master Blender Emma Walker calls it "sweetness wrapped in delicious smooth smoke," which is as accurate a three-word description as anything the critics have landed on.
First formalized in 1865, Black Label has been the benchmark for blended Scotch for over a century. Whisky Advocate gave it 88 points and called it "the closest thing you will find to a complete whisky at this price." The smoke is present but restrained — enough to add complexity without requiring commitment to heavily peated whisky.
SUGGESTED SERVES :
| Highball | 2 oz over ice, top with soda water and a lemon slice — dilution opens the blend and carbonation lifts the smoke into the nose |
| Neat | give it a minute at room temperature; sweetness arrives first, then the spice and peat follow as it warms |
| Old Fashioned | brown sugar, Angostura bitters, orange peel over a large cube — the dark fruit and spice carry perfectly |
