Saveiro 'Vento de Oeste' Madeira 750ml
PORTUGAL : MADEIRA
CONVENTIONAL : Tinta Negra
FULL-BODIED, RAISIN, SORGHUM, ROASTED ORANGE, BAKING SPICE, OAK
Madeira is one of the world's great fortified wines, made on the Portuguese island of the same name, aged through deliberate oxidation, and built to outlast virtually everything else in a cellar. The Saveiro 'Vento de Oeste' starts with Tinta Negra, Madeira's most planted grape, then adds an atypical chapter: 12 to 18 months in used bourbon barrels, a finishing technique Haus Alpenz pioneered for this bottling.
The barrel doesn't overwhelm. Subtle vanilla and soft tannins extend the wine's natural acidity and rancio-tinged spice, landing somewhere between a traditional meio doce Madeira and something entirely its own. Wine & Spirits Magazine scored it 89 points.
PAIRINGS :
| Dark chocolate truffles | bitterness cuts the sweetness; raisin and cocoa echo each other |
| Aged Gouda | acidity cuts through fat; oxidative notes find kinship in the aged paste |
| Pecan pie | caramelized nuts echo the vanilla and roasted orange notes from the barrel |
