Amalaya Malbec 2023 375ml
ARGENTINA : SALTA : CALCHAQUÍ VALLEY
SUSTAINABLE : Malbec, Tannat, Petit Verdot
MED-BODIED, VIOLET, CHERRY, PLUM, WHITE PEPPER, OAK
Grown at 1,750–1,800 metres in the Calchaquí Valley — one of the highest wine regions on the planet — Amalaya's Malbec draws its intensity from thicker grape skins baked by altitude sun and its freshness from the region's dramatic day-to-night temperature swings. The Finca Las Mercedes estate grows in sandy, mineral-poor soils that push the vine to concentrate rather than bulk up.
The blend runs 85% Malbec with 10% Tannat for structure and 5% Petit Verdot for color and spice. A quarter of the wine spends eight months in French oak — enough to round the edges and add a whisper of vanilla without burying the primary fruit. 91 pts Tim Atkin 2024.
PAIRINGS :
| Grilled lamb chops | the wine's acid and tannin cut through the fat; violet and spice notes play off charred lamb |
| Beef short ribs | braised or smoked — slow-cooked collagen matches the tannin structure; plum fruit comes forward |
| Aged manchego | the wine's white pepper finish plays off the crystalline, nutty texture of the cheese |
