La Carbonera is the Torres family's Rioja operation, established in 2005 in the village of Labastida in Rioja Alavesa. Altos Ibéricos draws from some of the appellation's oldest vines—60 to 80 years on average—producing the low yields and concentrated fruit that give this Crianza its depth at the price point.
2019 was one of Rioja's great recent vintages. The Consejo Regulador called it "the" vintage: a warm growing season, smaller clusters from wind damage at flowering, yields running 20% below average. The result is notable structure, aromatic intensity, and aging potential to spare. James Suckling: 91 points.
PAIRINGS :
| Roast lamb with garlic and herbs | the classic Rioja pairing; tannins cut through fat and peppercorn spice echoes rosemary |
| Aged Manchego | nutty cheese richness meets the creamy oak; a natural regional match |
| Jamón ibérico | savory cured ham pairs with the dark cherry and vanilla; intensifies both |
