Burgess Cabernet Sauvignon Contadina Napa Valley 2018 750ml
USA : CALIFORNIA : NAPA VALLEY
Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Malbec
FULL-BODIED, BLACKBERRY, CASSIS, DARK CHERRY, MINT, NEUTRAL OAK
“Contadina” — Italian for peasant farmer — is Burgess Cellars’ Howell Mountain estate Cabernet, sourced from two historic vineyards on opposite slopes: Sorenson’s west-facing volcanic ash soils at 800–1,000 feet, first planted in 1872, and Haymaker facing east, contributing the Petit Verdot and Malbec. Winemaker Meghan Zobeck ferments with native yeast and ages 22 months in French oak barrique — 15% new, 85% neutral — letting the mountain character drive the wine.
The 2018 vintage was unusually cool and slow — harvest ran 1–2 weeks late as extended sunshine built complexity without heat spikes. Vinous awarded 92 points on release: “a powerful, old-school wine… dark cherry, plum, scorched earth, game, licorice and tar.” Seven years on, the tannins have integrated and the wine is showing serious depth. Drinks well through 2035.
PAIRINGS :
| Dry-aged ribeye | tannin structure and dark fruit hold up to the char and marbling |
| Braised short rib ragu over pappardelle | the wine’s firm backbone cuts through richness; dark fruit mirrors the beef |
| Aged Parmigiano-Reggiano | savory and nutty characters echo the wine’s earthy, mineral notes |
