The Poor Ranch sits in the hills above Hopland, homesteaded in 1888 and farmed by the same family — now six generations — ever since. Johnny and Susan Poor have 90 acres of wine grapes certified organic by the CCOF; the Carignan block was planted in 1942, dry-farmed from day one, head-trained, and rooted in St. George rootstock that the vines have been reaching through for over 80 years.
Dewey's Wines is the project of Charlie Miller, who spent five years as assistant to Michael Cruse at Cruse Wine Company before founding the label — named after his dog — in 2016. His approach here: 75% whole-cluster fermentation in an open-top fermenter, 18 months in neutral oak, bottled unfined and unfiltered in March 2021 with minimal added sulfur. 100 cases produced.
PAIRINGS :
| Skirt steak or bavette | tannin grip handles the char; sour cherry reads as the sauce |
| Braised lamb shoulder | slow-cooked fat needs acidity; bitter chocolate mirrors the braise |
| Aged Manchego or sharp Cheddar | tannin and fat in balance; cranberry cuts through the richness |
