Domaine Zind-Humbrecht Alsace Grand Cru Riesling Sommerberg 2021 750mL
FRANCE : ALSACE : ALSACE GRAND CRU SOMMERBERG
CERTIFIED BIODYNAMIC : Riesling
LIGHT-BODIED, CITRUS ZEST, GRANITE MINERAL, STONE FRUIT, AROMATIC HERBS, NEUTRAL OAK
Pierre-Emile Humbrecht found this 0.32-hectare parcel on a steep granite slope in Niedermorschwihr in 2010, acquired it, let it rest two years, and replanted from the estate’s own massal selection at high density. The 2021 harvest arrived after April frost and summer mildew cut yields to 13 hl/ha—fewer than one-quarter of the Grand Cru maximum. What survived was extraordinary.
The must fermented slowly for an entire year in large foudres before turning dry. Bottled January 2023. The wine is still slightly closed—granite terroir Riesling almost always is at this stage—but the acidity is coiled and precise, the finish long and completely dry.
99 James Suckling. Drinking window 2027–2046+.
PAIRINGS :
| Flammekueche | acidity cuts crème fraîche and lardons cleanly; minerality amplifies the char |
| Seared scallops with citrus beurre blanc | granite mineral and citrus edge match the scallop’s sweetness without overpowering it |
| Thai green curry (moderate heat) | high acidity handles the chili; florals echo lemongrass and kaffir lime |
