Francois Crochet Sancerre 2024 750ml
FRANCE : LOIRE VALLEY : SANCERRE
ORGANIC : Sauvignon Blanc
LIGHT-MEDIUM BODIED, GOOSEBERRY, CITRUS, STONY MINERAL, NO OAK
In 2024, mildew hit Sancerre's organic producers harder than almost any vintage in recent memory — June and July brought two and a half times the normal rainfall, and biodynamic estates like Crochet fought the season with copper sprays and hand-selection rather than systemic fungicides. The losses were severe enough that all the parcels normally bottled as single-vineyard wines — Petit Chemarin, Grand Chemarin, Les Amoureuses — ended up in this one bottling instead. The exception was Le Chêne Marchand, the best site in Bué, which stayed separate. What's in this bottle is, in effect, the full domaine: a true-fingerprint Sancerre from one of the appellation's most meticulous biodynamic growers, at the entry-level price.
Spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel, nine months on fine lees, cellulose filtration, no fining. The result carries more weight and complexity than the label typically signals — gooseberry and blackcurrant leaf on the nose, citrus and stony mineral on the palate, with the clean, focused finish that good Bué terroir reliably delivers.
PAIRINGS :
| Fresh chèvre or Crottin de Chavignol | the Loire's foundational pairing — acidity and chalk minerality cut through creamy goat tang |
| Oysters on the half shell | brine-for-brine: the wine's mineral streak meets the oyster's saline character |
| Herb-roasted chicken with lemon and tarragon | simple, bright flavors that let the wine's citrus and green herb register lead |
