The Nolet family has distilled in Schiedam, on the Dutch coast, since 1691 — eleven generations in the same trade. Carolus Nolet Sr. spent the late 1970s digging through his ancestor's 17th-century distilling journals before blending pot-still spirit from the family's antique copper still, "Distilleerketel #1," with a lighter column-still distillate to land the recipe that launched in the US in 1983.

Charcoal filtered and rested in tile-lined tanks rather than oak, the wheat base gives more texture than most vodkas at the price — soft licorice and white pepper under the citrus, with a silky, full mouthfeel that holds up in a dry martini. Wine Enthusiast 90 pts.
