Lothian Vineyards sits within the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve — South Africa's first UNESCO biosphere — on the banks of the Palmiet River in Elgin, one of the Cape's coolest growing zones. The "Horny Owl" range is Lothian's everyday expression, hand-harvested from a low-yielding Shiraz block and made with the same minimal-intervention philosophy that runs through everything the Wilson family produces here.
Fermentation is open, drawing on both wild and cultured yeasts, with manual pigeage to build structure without over-extraction. The wine ages approximately a year in French oak before bottling unfiltered. The cool Elgin climate — maritime, high-altitude, and naturally temperate — keeps the dark fruit grounded and the pepper and spice intact in a way warmer South African sites can't.
