Michter's takes fully matured US*1 Kentucky Straight Bourbon and moves it into a second barrel built from wood air-dried for 18 months, then toasted rather than charred. Toasting caramelizes the wood sugars instead of burning them to charcoal, so the second barrel adds sweetness and spice where a charred one would strip and filter — nothing else is added or done to the whiskey.

This is the bottling that started the toasted-barrel category. Michter's first released it in the fall of 2014, years before toasted finishes turned up on every whiskey shelf, and it still returns only every few years as a small-batch limited release. Drinkhacker has rated recent releases A-.
