Naude Wines 'Langpad' Colombard Western Cape 2022 750ml
SOUTH AFRICA : WESTERN CAPE : OLIFANTS RIVER
NATURAL : Colombard
LIGHT-BODIED, WHITE PEACH, PEAR, DRIED HERBS, SEA SALT, NEUTRAL OAK
Colombard arrived in South Africa in the early 1700s as a distillation grape — prolific, reliable, and almost universally dismissed as a fine-wine variety. Ian Naudé changed that in 2020 with Langpad, the first boutique Old Vine Certified Colombard in South African history.
The grapes come from a single vineyard in Vredendal, planted in 1983 on sandy soils 35 kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean. The Benguela Current keeps temperatures cooler than the latitude suggests — the acidity that defines this wine is the ocean's work. Whole-bunch pressed, spontaneously fermented, kept on lees as long as possible, then 12 months in older French oak. No additions beyond minimal sulfites.
PAIRINGS :
| Grilled Whole Fish | the saline finish echoes the coast; bright acidity cuts through the skin and fat |
| Oysters | the wine's sea salt and mineral edge is a direct match; the dry finish lifts |
| Fresh Goat Cheese with Herbs | punchy acidity cleanses the fat; herb notes on both sides of the table |
