Bodegas Olivares 'Altos de la Hoya' Monastrell 2021 750mL
Bodegas Olivares 'Altos de la Hoya' Monastrell 2021 750mL
SPAIN : MURCIA : JUMILLA
ORGANIC : Mourvedre, Garnacha
FULL-BODIED, DARK CHERRY, WILD HERBS, MINERALS, FRENCH OAK
The Olivares family has farmed Finca Hoya de Santa Ana in the northwest quadrant of Jumilla since 1930. The sandy, chalk-rich soils at 830 to 840 meters sit high enough to cool nights sharply after scorching days — and sandy enough that phylloxera never took hold, leaving an estate planted with ungrafted Monastrell vines, the oldest dating to 1872.
Altos de la Hoya is 95% Monastrell, 5% Garnacha, fermented in stainless with wild yeast and aged six to eight months in French oak — used barrels, mostly, with a small percentage new each year. The Wine Advocate called it 91 points; Vinous' Josh Raynolds called it probably the top value in his annual tasting of new Spanish releases. At this price, that's the argument.
PAIRINGS :
| Braised lamb shoulder | the wine's mineral backbone and dark fruit hold up to slow-cooked richness |
| Grilled merguez sausage | spice-on-spice match; herbal notes echo the cumin and harissa |
| Aged manchego | regional pairing — the wine's structure cuts the fat cleanly |
