USA : CALIFORNIA : NAPA VALLEY
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec
FULL-BODIED, BLACK PLUM, BLACK CURRANT, DRIED ROSE PETAL, ESPRESSO, NEW OAK
Opus One is the Napa estate Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild and Robert Mondavi founded together, and the 2019 is built the way Bordeaux would build it — 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Malbec, 22 days on skins, then 19 months in new French oak.
The season started wet, with spring rain near double the annual average and budbreak fifteen days late, before a warm end of summer caught the fruit up and picking began September 10th. What came out is creamy and satiny over fine-grained tannins, dark fruit set against savory herbs and cocoa, with a dark-chocolate bitterness on the finish.
James Suckling called it "a classic wine with the purity and beauty of the best of the vintage." Jeb Dunnuck puts the drinking window at 2023–2045.
PAIRINGS :
| Dry-aged ribeye | fat meets fine-grained tannin, nothing competes with the cassis |
| Rack of lamb with rosemary | the herb picks up the wine's savory note |
| Wild mushroom risotto | earthy, savory, and a real vegetarian match |
