PORTUGAL : MADEIRA
Malvasia, Tinta Negra
FULL-BODIED, MEDIUM-SWEET, CARAMELIZED ORANGE, COFFEE, DRIED DATE, OAK
The New York Malmsey is the creation of The Rare Wine Co. — America's foremost merchant of old and rare Madeiras — in collaboration with Vinhos Barbeito, whose cellars hold some of the last great libraries of 19th century Madeira. Each wine in the Historic Series references a style that was fashionable in a specific American city. The New York bottling references the rich, luscious Malmseys that affluent New Yorkers prized from the colonial period through the end of the Civil War, when Madeira was the country's most prestigious table wine.
The blend is 85% Malvasia from Arco de Sao Jorge and 15% Tinta Negra from Estreito de Camara de Lobos — Malvasia aged 15 to 20 years, Tinta Negra aged 40 to 60 years — matured in the traditional Canteiro method, meaning barrel aging in warm lodges under the Madeiran sun rather than the estufagem heat tanks used for younger wines. The result is 97 g/l of residual sugar and 19% ABV, balanced by Madeira's characteristically high acidity. Wine Enthusiast: 93 pts, Editors' Choice.
PAIRINGS :
| Stilton with toasted walnuts | the salt plays against the sweetness; the wine's acidity handles the fat |
| Dark chocolate cake | coffee and toffee notes bridge the bittersweet; 19% ABV holds its own |
| Salted caramel tart | caramelized sugar echoes the wine's own brown-sugar depth |
