Schplïnk Grüner Veltliner 2023 3L Boxed Wine
AUSTRIA : NIEDERÖSTERREICH : WEINVIERTEL
SUSTAINABLE : Grüner Veltliner
LIGHT-BODIED, WHITE PEPPER, GREEN APPLE, CITRUS ZEST, NO OAK
Weingut Norbert Bauer has been farming the Pulkautal valley near the Czech border since 1721 — eleven generations of the same family, now with an Austrian sustainability certification that mandates organic vineyard practices. The “Schplïnk!” format was commissioned by NYC importer Communal specifically to make this Weinviertel Grüner accessible: same wine, better economics, no pretense.
Grapes are hand-harvested, gently pressed with 12 hours of skin maceration for aromatics, then fermented spontaneously over 22 days in stainless steel and kept on fine lees until just before filling. The 3L bag-in-box stays fresh for weeks after opening — and at four bottles per box, the math is hard to argue with. 89 pts — Michael Apstein, Wine Review Online.
PAIRINGS :
| Wiener schnitzel | the classic Austrian match — acidity cuts the crumb coating, white pepper echoes the lemon |
| Asparagus with hollandaise | high-acid Weinviertel Grüner handles asparagus’s tricky sulfur; the rich sauce needs the cut |
| Spicy Thai or Cambodian dishes | 89-pt reviewer noted this directly: it “cut through the mild — and not so mild — spice” |
