Gruner Veltliner
LIGHT-BODIED, LIME, WHITE PEPPER, GREEN HERB, STONE FRUIT, NO OAK
Steinschaden is a six-generation estate in Engabrunn whose cellar holds the oldest basket press in the German-speaking world — cast in 1564 — alongside one of the largest wooden vats in Austria, a 40,400-liter barrel whose empty weight alone runs ten tons. The family farms roughly 200 vineyard parcels across the Kamp Valley, including Ried Stein, one of only 52 classified Erste Lage sites in all of Austria.
The Selektion is fermented cold in stainless steel — no oak, fruit-forward, and built for immediate drinking. It comes in a 1.5L bag-in-box that keeps the wine fresh for up to six weeks once opened, which makes it the right answer for a long summer weekend. One note on the label: Austrian DAC law prohibits bag-in-box wines from carrying the Kamptal appellation regardless of where the grapes were grown. The box says Niederösterreich; the wine is Kamptal.
PAIRINGS :
| Wiener Schnitzel | acidity cuts the breading; white pepper echoes the lemon squeeze |
| White asparagus with Hollandaise | a regional Austrian classic; the wine's acidity lifts the richness |
| Soft goat cheese and herb crackers | herbal notes in the wine mirror the cheese's tang |
