Blatina is a female-flowering variety — it cannot self-pollinate, so companion vines (Trnjak and Kambuša) are co-planted and co-harvested in the same rows, producing an agronomically necessary field blend. Bariša Škegro farms organically, uses native yeasts, and macerates on skins for 8–10 days in open vats before finishing in stainless steel with no oak. The wine is built to express the limestone terroir of Hercegovina — not to impress an international stylistic benchmark.
The result is a medium-bodied red with juicy acidity, soft tannin, and a distinctly mineral, slightly salty edge — critics have compared Blatina to a cross between Sangiovese and Gamay. The 2020 is drinking well now and best through 2027.
