The Sefu project isn't an estate wine — it's built on fruit from Laci Hetei, a farmer outside the Transylvanian village of Beltiug whose deep-loam vineyard grows nine different grapes side by side. Edgar Brutler, Geisenheim-trained but deliberately working by feel rather than formula, blends the Cabernet Franc (fermented cool in stainless steel) with whole-bunch Syrah macerated on the skins and finished in oak.
Bottled unfined and unfiltered with barely any sulfur, this is a rustic, honest read on a region — Crișana, in Romania's far northwest — that almost nobody outside it has tasted.
