Getariako Txakolina is the most coastal wine in Spain — literally. The Errasti family's vineyards at Bodegas Zudugarai sit 90 meters above the Bay of Biscay, farmed ecologically within a natural park where herbicides are strictly prohibited. The wine is bottled young and deliberately, to capture the natural CO₂ of fermentation — the result is that barely-there prickle on the tongue that defines the style.
Pronounced ahn-cho-la, Antxiola takes its name from a 15th-century fortified home in the nearby town of Orio. Written records date the house to 1555; the Errasti family began farming these vines before the appellation was formally established in 1990. This is one of the founding producers of Getariako Txakolina, and the wine tastes like it.
Eric Asimov named it in the New York Times' Hot Weather Wines list: "it's delightful … and makes a nice daytime drink." — NYT, June 2024.
PAIRINGS :
| Oysters on the half shell | the wine's briny sea-salt mirrors the ocean mineral of fresh oysters |
| Grilled octopus | coastal char deepens the salinity; the spritz refreshes between bites |
| Pintxos with anchovies and olive oil | citrus acidity cuts the salt and oil — the Basque house pairing |
