Badalucco de la Iglesia '1° Primo Passaggio' Vino Bianco 2022 750ml
ITALY : SICILY : CONTRADA TRIGLIA
BIODYNAMIC : Grillo
MED-FULL-BODIED, ORANGE BLOSSOM, BERGAMOT, APRICOT, SEA SALT, USED OAK
Contrada Triglia sits less than 200 meters from the Mediterranean in western Sicily — the terra rosa soils, constant sea air, and old-vine Grillo (“Griddu”) make this one of the island’s most recognized sites for the variety. Pierpaolo Badalucco and Beatriz de la Iglesia Garcia farm the plot biodynamically, by hand, as part of the Dos Tierras project they began together in 2000 after Pierpaolo returned to his family’s ancestral holdings in Petrosino.
The ‘1°’ is the first pass: hand-harvested Grillo, foot-pressed, fermented in stainless steel on native yeasts with 10–12 days of skin contact, then aged a full year on the lees in old 500L oak, acacia, and chestnut casks before bottling unfined and unfiltered. Amber-colored, gently oxidative, structured but energetic — it sits at the accessible end of the Badalucco portfolio, which runs from this through the long-aged Pipa ¾ and the perpetuo-method XI Perpetuum.
The family has been making wine in this corner of Sicily since 1880. The methods are older than that.
PAIRINGS :
| Sicilian fish stew | brine and citrus in the wine mirrors the stew’s intensity; skin-contact tannin grips the richness |
| Aged pecorino | saline backbone and oxidative edge hold up to the sharpness without getting swallowed |
| Grilled octopus with charred lemon | sea salt notes tie the pairing; tannin cuts the char |
