Bardstown Bourbon Company's Collaborative Series has become one of whiskey's most interesting ongoing experiments, and the Foursquare edition is where the concept peaked. The blend: 90% seven-year Indiana rye (51% rye mash bill) and 10% seventeen-year Tennessee bourbon, then handed off to Foursquare Distillery in Barbados for twenty-three months in ex-rum casks. Foursquare, run by master blender Richard Seale, makes traditional Bajan rum — no additives, no added sugar — and those clean, complex barrels impart depth without sugaring the whiskey into softness.
The rye spine holds. At 107 proof, this remains a whiskey first: plantain, cocoa nibs, and banana arrive from the rum cask, but the rye spice cuts through throughout. Whisky Advocate scored it 94 points and named it #9 in their Top 20 Whiskeys of 2023, calling it a whiskey that "leaps out of the glass" with "chocolate croissant, cigar box, and banana split aromas" and a long finish of "chocolate malt, cinnamon candies, and toffee, fading to charred oak and maple syrup." Drinkhacker gave it an A — "a near-perfect marriage" of rum and whiskey traditions.
PAIRINGS :
| Dark chocolate (70%+) | rum-cask tropical fruit notes find their natural foil in the bittersweet; toffee on the finish echoes and extends |
| Smoked brisket | the whiskey's body and char handle fatty, smoky protein; molasses finish ties into the BBQ's caramelized crust |
| Pecan pie | toffee, brown sugar, and nutty depth all align; vanilla and charred oak knit the pastry together |
