Bergström Wines Sigrid Chardonnay Willamette Valley 2021 750ml
USA : OREGON : WILLAMETTE VALLEY
BIODYNAMIC : Chardonnay
MED-BODIED, LEMON CURD, POACHED PEAR, JASMINE, SALTY MINERAL, OAK
The Sigrid draws from Bergström's oldest Chardonnay vines across three estate vineyards — Bergström in the Dundee Hills, Le Pre du Col, and Silice in Ribbon Ridge and the Chehalem Mountains. Three distinct soils: volcanic Jory basalt in the Hills, marine-sedimentary chalk on Ribbon Ridge, mixed geology in the Chehalem Mountains. Each vineyard fermented separately in small French oak barrels; only the finest barrels make the final blend.
Bergström has farmed biodynamically since 1999 — Demeter-certified in 2000, among Oregon's first. Winemaker Josh Bergström trained in Burgundy, and it shows: full malolactic fermentation, native yeast, 18 months sur lie (12 in French oak, 6 in stainless). The 2021 vintage delivered concentration and freshness in equal measure, the product of a warm summer that followed an extraordinary June heat dome.
Critical consensus is unusually tight: 96 pts from both Jeb Dunnuck and James Suckling, 95 from Vinous, 94+ from Wine Advocate. Audrey Frick noted that the first vintage of Sigrid appeared in 2006, "before people really believed in Willamette Valley Chardonnay" — this is still the wine making the argument.
PAIRINGS :
| Dungeness crab with drawn butter | citrus acidity and salinity mirror the crab's sweetness; the wine's richness holds through the butter |
| Roasted chicken with hazelnut cream sauce | the wine's hazelnut note finds a natural Oregon match; viscosity handles the cream |
| Truffle risotto | earthy richness meets the wine's floral-mineral complexity without dominating either direction |
