Bernheim was the first new wheat whiskey released in the United States since Prohibition — Heaven Hill launched it in 2005 as a genuine category revival. The Barrel Proof batches are the uncut version: no dilution, no chill filtration, cask strength. Batch A226 is 124 proof, drawn from barrels aged 7–9 years at the Bernheim Distillery in Louisville.
The 51% winter wheat mash bill inverts the standard bourbon formula — wheat is the majority grain here, not corn. A226 runs to the dessert end of the line: vanilla sherbet, caramel and toasted almond on the nose, cherry pie and raspberry coulis on the palate, then blackberry cobbler and baking spice on a long, warm finish. It is the third-strongest batch Heaven Hill has released in this line, behind A225 and A224. Whisky Advocate 92 pts.
