Black Elephant Vintners 'Two Dogs a Peacock and a Horse' Sauvignon Blanc 2023 750ml
SOUTH AFRICA : WESTERN CAPE : FRANSCHHOEK VALLEY
SUSTAINABLE : Sauvignon Blanc
MED-BODIED, PASSION FRUIT, GOOSEBERRY, TROPICAL, LEES-TEXTURED, NO OAK
Black Elephant Vintners sources fruit from multiple sites across the Western Cape, vinifying each parcel separately before blending — the multi-site approach is deliberate, building aromatic complexity from vineyards with different soil types, elevations, and exposures. Each pick is handled reductively in the early morning, cold-settled for three days, then fermented slowly at low temperature. Two months of weekly batonage on the primary lees adds the creamy mid-palate texture without touching oak.
Behind the whimsical name is a genuinely interesting founding story: Kevin Swart ("black" in Afrikaans) and Raymond Ndlovu ("elephant" in Zulu) sold their Johannesburg financial firm in 2011 and moved their families to Franschhoek — winemaker Jacques Wentzel (the "vintners") joined shortly after, and Black Elephant Vintners has been making the case for accessible, honest Cape wine ever since.
PAIRINGS :
| Vegetable curry | the wine's fruit weight softens the heat while the acidity keeps pace |
| Goat cheese salad | Sauvignon Blanc's classic foil; minerality cuts through the cheese |
| Grilled shrimp with mango salsa | tropical intensity mirrors the mango; lees texture holds against the char |
