Buffalo Trace bought a separate set of oak barrels in 2012, with the purchase overseen by the Chicago Rabbinical Council, and filled them in a dedicated kosher section of the warehouse. Before each bottling run the lines are cleaned down so no non-kosher spirit touches the whiskey.

The name trips people up, so worth saying plainly: this is a bourbon. Rye is the secondary grain in the mash, not the base. Breaking Bourbon called the three kosher bottlings the first kosher whiskeys from a major U.S. distillery.

It is released once a year, after Passover, and it is cRc certified kosher but not kosher for Passover itself.
