Cakebread's Benchland Select draws from prime western benchland sites in Rutherford and Oakville, including Hill Ranch — the parcel that surrounds the Cakebread family home — where gravelly loam soils drain freely and afternoon shade from the Mayacamas Mountains extends the growing season into ideal ripening conditions. Five clones of Cabernet Sauvignon, fermented separately in small stainless steel tanks, were blended and aged 22 months in French oak (63% new).

The 2019 vintage opened with significant winter rainfall that set up the soils beautifully, then delivered moderate summer temperatures that let the grapes ripen slowly and evenly. The result is a wine Jeb Dunnuck rated 94 points — "flawlessly balanced, medium to full-bodied, and as elegant and seamless as they come, with potential to evolve for 15-20 years."
