Cantina di Lana Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2023 750ml
ITALY : ABRUZZO
Montepulciano
MED-BODIED, DARK PLUM, BLACKBERRY JAM, COFFEE, COCOA, DRIED FLOWERS
Cantina di Lana is a two-hundred-year-old Veneto estate that spent most of that history in wool — lana, in Italian — and only took up vines in the mid-19th century. The house bottles wine sourced from its own property and from across Italy, and since Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is by law an Abruzzo appellation, this one comes from the sourced side of the business rather than the home estate.
It arrives from a hard year. Downy mildew took up to 80% of the crop in parts of Abruzzo in 2023, by Gambero Rosso's account, and the region's reds were still largely untasted when they wrote it up.
What you're buying is the importer's note, plainly: dark plum, blackberry jam, coffee and cocoa, held in shape by acidity. 100% Montepulciano at 13%. No decanting, no cellar plan — open it on a Tuesday.
PAIRINGS :
| Sausage and broccoli rabe orecchiette | the bitterness needs fruit, the fat needs acid |
| Pepperoni pizza | cuts the tomato without fighting it |
| Grilled lamb chops with rosemary | the dried-flower note picks up the herb |
