Captain Morgan takes its name from Sir Henry Morgan, the 17th-century Welsh privateer who served as Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica — and the rum behind the name has been the de facto entry point to spiced rum for decades. The recipe is produced at Diageo's distillery in St. Croix, US Virgin Islands, from molasses-based Caribbean rum aged up to one year in oak before blending.

Reformulated in 2023 to include real Madagascar vanilla, the base spice profile is warm and approachable — sweet-forward, with cinnamon and clove underneath. Built to mix, it earns its shelf space as the standard-issue Captain and Cola.
