Cardhu has distilled on the hills above the Spey since 1824, when John and Helen Cumming started it as a farm distillery, and it has been a core malt in Johnnie Walker since the 1890s. Its everyday single malts go out at 40% in a light, orchard-sweet style. This is one of the rare chances to taste it at full strength.

The 16 Year Old from Diageo's 2022 Special Releases spent its years in refill, recharred American oak before a finish in casks seasoned with Jamaican pot still rum, and was bottled at natural cask strength, 58% ABV. The rum shows up as fruit rather than funk — pink grapefruit, ripe mango, spiced pineapple and green banana over rum toffee — with drying oak and a peppery finish. A few drops of water round it out.
