Antonio Benedetto Carpano opened a shop on Turin's Piazza Castello in 1786 and created one of the first commercial vermouths in the world, founding a category. Antica Formula is made today by Fratelli Branca using Carpano's original recipe: vanilla from Madagascar and Tahiti, saffron from Iran, and wormwood from the Piedmont Alps, each botanical drawn out through hot infusion or cold maceration before blending into a wine base.

Wine Enthusiast awarded 95 points: "Rich, fruity and enticing, warmed with notes of fig and dried cherries, and just faint hints of spiced gingerbread and bitter orange peel." It holds its own over ice as an aperitif, and it elevates any Manhattan or Negroni. Drinkhacker awarded A (9.5/10), calling it "the first lady of aromatic wines." Refrigerate after opening.
