It's hard to beat the location of this estate — 5.5 hectares of clay and deep gravel on Pomerol's central plateau, across the road from Vieux Château Certan and a stone's throw from Pétrus. The Barreau family has owned it since 1925, and Jean-Claude Berrouet has guided the winemaking since 2013.
2016 opened with record spring rain, then turned to a summer of drought, and Pomerol's deep clay held the water the vines needed. The blend is 65% Merlot, 31% Cabernet Franc and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon.
"A deeply intense and plush Pomerol with immaculately ripe fruit and tannins," per James Suckling, 98 pts. Jane Anson found it "wonderfully rich and expressive" yet "young, poised and held back" — Decanter 96 pts. Vinous 95 pts, Wine Advocate 94+ pts, Wine Enthusiast 94 pts.
