Certan de May sits on Pomerol's central plateau — 5.5 hectares of clay and deep gravel, with Vieux Château Certan and La Fleur-Pétrus for neighbors. The estate passed from the de May de Certan line to the Barreau family in 1925; Jean-Luc Barreau runs it today, with Jean-Claude Berrouet consulting since the 2013 vintage.
2018 opened with a wet, mildew-heavy spring, then turned dry and sunny — 1,136 hours of sunshine from June to September, by the estate's count. Pomerol's clay held water through the drought. The blend is 60% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, more Franc than the vineyard's planting would suggest. James Suckling 96 pts, Wine Spectator 93 pts, Decanter 93 pts. Wine Spectator puts it at its best from 2023 through 2035, so it's drinking now.
PAIRINGS :
| Roast leg of lamb with rosemary | fine tannin and dark fruit carry the fat and the herbs |
| Duck breast with cassis sauce | the sauce meets the cassis and blackberry in the glass |
| Beef short ribs braised in red wine | slow-cooked richness softens the grippy finish |
