Chicken Cock traces its lineage to Paris, Kentucky, 1856 — Bourbon County, named for the French royal family, a few miles from the city's French namesake. That transatlantic link is the whole point: the Chanticleer is a Kentucky Straight Bourbon finished in French Cognac barrels, 32 barrels total, released once a year. The brand spent decades as the house whiskey of Harlem's Cotton Club — famously smuggled across the Canadian border in tin cans during Prohibition — and the commemorative tin that wraps each bottle nods directly to that chapter.
The Cognac finish is the pivot. The base bourbon — 70% corn, 21% rye, 9% malted barley, distilled at Bardstown Bourbon Company — is already structured and fruit-forward at 112 proof. The time in French Cognac wood adds a layer of dried stone fruit and raisin that integrates without overwhelming: no grape-forward sweetness bleeding through, just a deepening of the midpalate. Drinkhacker scored it 9.0/10 and called it "a delightful change of pace"; Breaking Bourbon described the Cognac finish as "best-in-class."
