Clynelish sits on the northern Sutherland coast — one of the most remote distilleries on the Scottish mainland, built in 1968 directly opposite the original Clynelish distillery that was later renamed Brora. Both sites now operate under Diageo. About 99% of what Clynelish makes feeds the Johnnie Walker Gold Label blending program; the 14 Year Old is the single malt that escapes.

The wax character is the thing. A long fermentation (~55 hours) builds fruity esters, and the distillery retains natural oils through the distillation process, reintroducing them after each cleaning. The result is a mouth-coating texture — mandarin, dried orange, and brine on top; dry oak, vanilla, and ginger underneath; a warming spicy finish. A few drops of water open the floral notes without collapsing the structure.
