Clynelish sits in a small category of its own — a Northern Highlands distillery known less for peat than for a rare waxy, oleaginous texture that comes from short condensers and a slow distillation regime. Diageo's 2022 Special Releases sent this 12-year-old through an extra two years in Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso seasoned casks, which adds dried fruit and sherry warmth without overwriting the distillery character.

Whisky Advocate awarded it 87 points, noting candied orange, silky mouthfeel, and "pulsing spices" mid-palate. At 58.5% natural cask strength, a splash of water opens it considerably — herbal notes and ground ginger emerge, the wax texture deepens. Non-chill-filtered, natural color, bottled under the release name "The Golden Eyed Guardian."
