Buffalo Trace air-dries its barrel staves for about six months. For Cured Oak they sat outside for thirteen, long enough for weather to leach the harsh tannin out of the wood while the sugars and vanillin kept developing. The barrel arrives with more to give and less to punish.

Ten years in Warehouse C, the brick-and-limestone rickhouse Colonel Taylor built in the 1880s specifically for aging, then bottled at exactly 100 proof under the Bottled-in-Bond Act he helped write in 1897. The label and the man on it are the same story.

Released once in 2015, then gone for more than a decade. Buffalo Trace has been straightforward that this return is a one-time limited offering, not a new annual.
