d'Arenberg has made wine in McLaren Vale since 1912 — four generations of the Osborn family on the same land, the same basket presses from the 1860s still running today. Chester Osborn, the fourth generation, converted every estate and leased acre to NASAA-certified organic and biodynamic farming. The Stump Jump is d'Arenberg's everyday tier, but the farming doesn't change by label: the fruit comes from the same certified biodynamic vineyards, same open-fermenter, foot-trodden, basket-pressed process as the flagship labels.
2018 in McLaren Vale was hot and dry — only 30% of average rainfall from October through harvest — which pushed Grenache and Shiraz to natural ripeness at 14.5% ABV. The wine is full-figured and warm as you'd expect, with strawberry jam, plum, and a licorice-and-spice core from the Mourvèdre. Wine Enthusiast 87 pts.
