Viré-Clessé sits at the southern end of Burgundy where the limestone-and-clay soils of the Mâconnais produce Chardonnays with a texture and aging potential that rarely shows up in the price. André Bonhomme was among the winemakers who pushed for the upgrade from Mâcon-Viré to the more specific Viré-Clessé appellation in the 1990s — a signal of how seriously the family takes the terroir here.
The domaine has been in the Bonhomme family since 1956 and now runs four generations deep: daughter Jacqueline, her husband Eric, and their sons Aurélien and Johan. Eleven hectares of clay and limestone in Viré and Clessé. No herbicides, no pesticides, hand-harvested at low yields, fermented with indigenous yeasts in a mix of stainless steel and neutral oak, then full malolactic fermentation for texture.
