Jean Bousquet sold a fourth-generation family winery in Carcassonne and started over in Gualtallary, a corner of the Uco Valley that Mendoza growers had written off as too cold to ripen fruit. He planted at 4,000 feet in sandy, phylloxera-hostile soil, farmed organically from the first vine, and is still the largest vineyard holder in what has since become the most sought-after sub-region in Argentina.
This is the entry-level varietal bottling: fermented in stainless, ten days, no oak at all. What you're buying is fruit, with the day-night temperature swing at altitude doing the work oak usually gets credit for. James Suckling 90 pts.
