Domaine Charvin Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2023 750ml
FRANCE : RHONE : CHATEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE
ORGANIC : Grenache, Mourvedre, Vaccarese, Counoise, Syrah
FULL-BODIED, KIRSCH, WILD STRAWBERRY, GARRIGUE, CRACKED PEPPER, NO OAK
Laurent Charvin is the sixth generation to farm this estate, founded in 1851 in the sandy north-facing soils of Châteauneuf-du-Pape — cooler than most of the appellation, which has always pointed the wines toward elegance over weight. When Laurent took over in the early 1990s, he converted all 28 hectares to organic viticulture, stopped de-stemming, and committed to concrete — no barrels, not even old ones. At the time, almost no one in Châteauneuf was working this way.
The 2023 is a vintage of red-berry character and freshness — more kirsch and strawberry than the darker, weightier profile of previous years. Jeff Leve scored it 94 points: "kirsch, flowers, and strawberry... medium-bodied, vibrant, elegant, supple, and fresh." Vinous gave 95+. Drink through 2040.
PAIRINGS :
| Roasted leg of lamb with herbes de Provence | the regional match — garrigue in both; freshness cuts through the fat |
| Duck breast with cherry reduction | kirsch fruit mirrors the sauce; structure holds up to duck fat |
| Grilled wild boar or pork tenderloin | peppery spice echoes the char; natural for game and dark-meat pork |
