Domaine Paul Pillot Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge 1er "Clos Saint Jean" 2022 750ml
FRANCE : BURGUNDY : CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET
ORGANIC : Pinot Noir
LIGHT-BODIED, WILD STRAWBERRY, MULBERRY, DRIED HONEY, UMAMI, NEUTRAL OAK
Clos Saint Jean sits at one of the highest elevations in Chassagne-Montrachet, its clay-limestone soils producing some of the most elegantly structured reds in the appellation. Thierry Pillot — fourth generation at this 125-year-old domaine — farms 55-year-old Pinot Noir vines here organically, then vinifies with 50% whole clusters and indigenous yeast: a deliberate choice that adds spine without sacrificing the site's natural lift.
The 2022 opened "stunning from barrel" (Vinous 93) and earned 95 points from Decanter's Charles Curtis, MW, who noted "a beguiling sweetness perfectly balanced by crisp acidity and firm tannins." Aged in 350-liter barrels, 15% new, then bottled unfined and unfiltered. Drink 2027–2040.
PAIRINGS :
| Duck breast with cherry reduction | mirrors the wine's red fruit and earthy depth |
| Mushroom risotto | plays directly to the wine's umami core |
| Roasted lamb chops | tannic structure and acidity cut through the richness |
