La Pièce Sous le Bois sits under the treeline at 350 metres — the highest ground in Meursault, and the last vineyard Robert Ampeau acquired, in 1973. The bedrock matches the famous mid-slope crus, but the topsoils drain faster up here, which stresses the vines and pushes the wine toward tension rather than width.
2004 was a nervous year that September rescued, leaving the whites with firm, high-toned acidity and no excess weight. Decanter found the vintage's exceptional wines came disproportionately from higher vineyards, where minerality was emphasised — and this is the highest of them.
What you're buying is cellaring you didn't have to do. Ampeau holds its vintages two decades in cold cellars around Meursault and releases only when the family decides they're ready, which is why a 2004 is a current wine — give it forty-five minutes in a decanter.
