FRANCE : BEAUJOLAIS : PIERRES DORÉES

SUSTAINABLE : Gamay

LIGHT-BODIED, RASPBERRY, REDCURRANT, WILD CHERRY, WHITE PEPPER, NO OAK

The Romy family has farmed this corner of southern Beaujolais since 1700, and Nicolas Romy is the tenth generation to do it. The sector is called Les Pierres Dorées, the golden stones, after the ochre limestone the villages are built from and the clay and limestone soils under the vines.

Half the crop is destemmed here rather than fermented whole cluster, which is the Burgundy method and not the Beaujolais one. That single choice is why this reads as clear red fruit instead of the banana note carbonic maceration tends to leave behind. Nine months on fine lees in stainless steel, no oak at any point.

The vines are over fifty years old, and 2024 was a wet, mildew-ridden season that cost many Beaujolais growers most of their crop. What came through is lighter and brighter than the last two vintages. Serve it cold.

PAIRINGS :

Country terrine coarse pork and cornichons, the Lyonnais default
