Domaine Saint-Damien Gigondas Vieilles Vignes 2023 750ml
FRANCE : RHÔNE VALLEY : GIGONDAS
CERTIFIED ORGANIC : Grenache, Mourvèdre
FULL-BODIED, DARK CHERRY, PEPPER, GARRIGUE, SMOKED MEAT, NEUTRAL OAK
The Saurel family has farmed these slopes since 1821, but the Vieilles Vignes bottling is built around two specific old-vine parcels: Grenache planted in 1964 and Mourvèdre from 1977, grown on the lower alluvial terraces of Gigondas where round river stones over clay-limestone push concentration while keeping the profile composed.
Romain Saurel ferments in large concrete vats with extended maceration, then ages 12 months in 50-hectoliter neutral foudres — nothing that adds character, just time. Bottled unfiltered and unfined. Jeb Dunnuck called the 2023 "a gorgeous, clean, complex, layered Gigondas" — 94 points, drink 2026–2041.
PAIRINGS :
| Braised lamb shank | the classic Grenache pairing; tannin and fat work through one another |
| Duck confit | rich, gamey duck amplifies the wine's dark fruit and earthy depth |
| Beef daube Provençal | olive-and-herb braise mirrors the garrigue notes directly |
